What is the role?

Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of Network Engineers - Network Operations Team (Band 7).

Enterprise Technology & Architecture Branch provides critical ICT infrastructure and services to AFP members in support of Policing for a safer Australia. The Network Operations team is responsible for the design, provision, and support of secure and robust AFP network connectivity both in Australia and in overseas post locations. 

This is an exciting opportunity to join a multi-disciplined team in a dynamic mixed technology environment. The successful applicant will enjoy exposure to a wide variety of technologies including WAN, LAN and wireless, data Centre networks, Internet gateway and DMZ, load balancing and software defined networks. Some roles include an out-of-hours technical response and the opportunity for domestic and international travel.

What will you do?

Network Engineers and Senior Network Engineers will work under the broad direction of the Network Operations Team Leader to deliver all team responsibilities. Key tasks and duties are:

• Sustain, enhance and manage critical infrastructure in LAN/WAN, cloud, internet and data communications network environments.
• Diagnose and resolve problems quickly and be able to communicate outcomes with technical users.
• Perform troubleshooting and incident response, with root cause identification and timely resolution of network problems.
• Plan and complete routine preventative maintenance and upgrade of network infrastructure.
• Proactive monitoring and analysis to enhance stability and availability of the network.
• Willingness to learn new technologies and work responsively in a team environment.
• Assist in identifying trends and support continuous service improvement to the benefit of the AFP.
• Assist in the contribution to network design, strategic and technical direction, advice and planning.
• Mentor and develop the technical capability of colleagues within the Network Operations team.

Essential Requirements

• You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
• A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
• You must be willing to relocate to Canberra, ACT.
• Have contemporary knowledge and experience relevant to the role.
• Experience and skill in the management, configuration, and troubleshooting of enterprise networks.
• Relevant qualification/s or extensive experience and knowledge. 

Experience as a Network Engineer including expertise in one or more of the following technologies:

• Cloud Networking – Azure and AWS
• Software Defined Networking – Aruba SD-WAN and VMWare NSX T
• Gateway and Data Center Networking
• Campus (LAN/WAN) Networking – Routing, Switching and Wireless
• Networking Security - Firewalls and VPNs

Desirable Requirements

• Experience with automation, scripting, and programming (e.g. Python, Ansible, Linux)
• Professional industry certification
• Working knowledge of the Information Security Manual (ISM) and Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF)

What is the role?

The Technology Operations & Chief Information Officer Command is a trusted frontline partner that enables policing through problem solving and technical expertise and excellence. The CIO Command provides corporate application, ICT end-to-end solutions, advice, cyber security and infrastructure that underpin AFP activities. The CIO Command aims to be a highly collaborative, innovative, reliable and trusted enabler across the AFP.

Within the Command, the Cloud and Infrastructure Operations Section have a vacancy for Cloud Infrastructure Engineer Band 8, residing in the Infrastructure Operations Team. The team is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the AFP’s national and international compute and storage server infrastructure in support of the organisation’s corporate and operational requirements. This role is responsible for installing and configuring hardware, managing firmware, and overseeing server endpoints as well as developing solutions for large an small scale projects.

Successful applicants will provide support for the complex and critical nature of tasks involved to ensure the infrastructure is robust, secure, and capable of supporting the agency's operations. The applicant will also be required to develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the AFP business and the impact of roles and functions undertaken in relation to the organisation’s reputation to effectively manage operations.

What will you do?

• Administering, monitoring, optimisation and problem resolution related to ESXi, Microsoft Server OS, Dell and Riverbed hardware and administrative environments such as Dell’s Open Manage Enterprise (OME) and Riverbed’s Steel Fusion Core interfaces.

• Operational support tasks such as asset control, physical installation and decommissioning of server hardware and working with power and networking infrastructure within the AFP’s data centres and regional sites.

• Troubleshoot incidents, identify root cause, fix and document problems, and implement preventative measures.

• Collaborating across multiple teams within ICT and the business to evaluate and identify optimal infrastructure solutions.

• Develop policies and procedures, create detailed technical documentation for team use and knowledge transfer (build/configuration documents, operational handovers, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)).

• Support formal change management processes, including occasional after-hours work.

• Maintain skills and participate in professional development.

Essential Requirements

• Relevant formal qualifications from a recognised tertiary institution or demonstrated equivalent skills and experience.

• You will be a hands-on and a pragmatic leader with experience leading technical teams to achieve outcomes.

What is the role?

The Technology Operations & Chief Information Officer Command (TOCIO) is seeking passionate, and suitably skilled and experienced Cyber Security Analysts to join our unified Security and Network Operations Centre (SNOC) in Cyber Defence with a strong team culture, where collaboration, trust, and shared accountability underpin how we operate. As a team member you will help protect the availability, integrity and security of AFP’s critical systems and services that enable policing operations and outcomes.

The SNOC is responsible for continuous integrated security and network monitoring, incident detection, triage, response and escalation of potential threats and operational incidents in real-time. The SNOC combines cyber security operations with network operations to provide end-to-end visibility of AFP’s ICT environments.

What will you do?

• Support and mentor junior staff to build operational capability and confidence.
• Monitoring Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) tools and other security and network monitoring platforms for threats, faults, and performance degradation.
• Detect, triage, investigate and respond to cyber security incidents and network events.
• Escalating incidents as required to the Hunt and Incident Response team for further investigation and action, in line with severity impact and playbooks.
• Escalating significant network performance issues and faults to the Network Operations team for analysis and remediation.
• Correlate security alerts with network and infrastructure telemetry to determine root cause.
• Resolving minor incidents and false positives.
• Maintain accurate incident records, logs and handover notes.
• Collecting, assessing and reporting threat intelligence to inform appropriate stakeholders and improve accuracy and effectiveness of monitoring efforts.
• Contribute to the development improvement of detection rules, alerts and playbooks.
• Work Collaboratively with cyber security, network, platform and applications teams.
• Identify recurring issues and recommend improvements to reduce operational risk.
• Participate in exercises, training and capability uplift activities.
• Adhere to operations, security and compliance requirements.

Essential Requirements
