What is the role?

The Technology Operations & Chief Information Officer Command is a trusted frontline partner that enables policing through problem solving and technical expertise and excellence. The CIO Command provides corporate application, ICT end-to-end solutions, advice, cyber security and infrastructure that underpin AFP activities. The CIO Command aims to be a highly collaborative, innovative, reliable and trusted enabler across the AFP.

Within the Command, the Cloud and Infrastructure Operations Section have a vacancy for Cloud Infrastructure Engineer Band 8, residing in the Infrastructure Operations Team. The team is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the AFP’s national and international compute and storage server infrastructure in support of the organisation’s corporate and operational requirements. This role is responsible for installing and configuring hardware, managing firmware, and overseeing server endpoints as well as developing solutions for large an small scale projects.

Successful applicants will provide support for the complex and critical nature of tasks involved to ensure the infrastructure is robust, secure, and capable of supporting the agency's operations. The applicant will also be required to develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the AFP business and the impact of roles and functions undertaken in relation to the organisation’s reputation to effectively manage operations.


What will you do?

• Administering, monitoring, optimisation and problem resolution related to ESXi, Microsoft Server OS, Dell and Riverbed hardware and administrative environments such as Dell’s Open Manage Enterprise (OME) and Riverbed’s Steel Fusion Core interfaces.

• Operational support tasks such as asset control, physical installation and decommissioning of server hardware and working with power and networking infrastructure within the AFP’s data centres and regional sites.

• Troubleshoot incidents, identify root cause, fix and document problems, and implement preventative measures.

• Collaborating across multiple teams within ICT and the business to evaluate and identify optimal infrastructure solutions.

• Develop policies and procedures, create detailed technical documentation for team use and knowledge transfer (build/configuration documents, operational handovers, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)).

• Support formal change management processes, including occasional after-hours work.

• Maintain skills and participate in professional development.


Essential Requirements

• You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.

• A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.

• Relevant formal qualifications from a recognised tertiary institution or demonstrated equivalent skills and experience.

• Experience in the administration of Windows and Linux Server OS.

• Ability to perform analysis and diagnostics on system issues and develop solutions.


Desirable Requirements

The following skills and/or experience would be highly regarded:

• You are familiar with security concepts found in the ISM and the implementation of said concepts in a PROTECTED environment.

• You have a no-nonsense approach when participating in internal or external conversations and are able to communicate complex technical concepts to a broad audience, resolve issues and foster good relationships.

• You will be a hands-on and a pragmatic leader with experience leading technical teams to achieve outcomes.

• Demonstrated experience managing BAU tasks while working on project delivery.


Additional Information

• Job opportunities will be available Australia wide, however some travel will be required to Canberra.

• Successful candidates will be able to work from Canberra or the closest AFP headquarters in the respective state/territory and will have reporting lines to management located in Canberra.
