We are seeking a Senior Postdoctoral Research Fellow - Microbial Bioinformatics to join School of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Health.

Increasing evidence supports the role of the gut-brain axis—a bidirectional communication network between the gut and the central nervous system—in several aspects of cognition, social behaviour, anxiety and stress. The Cognitive Gut project, funded by the Australian Defence Science and Technology Fund, aims to investigate the complex relationship between the gut microbiome, cognitive performance, mental health, diet and stress among Australian military personnel. We have identified several lead candidates associated with improved health and performance, which we are now advancing into preclinical studies to evaluate their influence on the gut-brain axis. Ultimately, this research will support the development of new strategies to prevent or restore cognitive impairment and improve the health of both Australian Defence members and the general public. The successful candidate will join this exciting project to lead the bioinformatic characterisation of microbiome samples from Defence cohorts and preclinical models. This will include evaluating the relationship between the gut microbiome, cognitive performance and other health metrics in response to microbiome-targeted interventions.

The Centre for Microbiome Research (CMR) was established in 2020 by Professor Gene Tyson, an expert in the field of microbial ecology. Professor Tyson and his team are actively involved in the development of innovative culture-independent molecular approaches and bioinformatic tools, and their application to answer important questions about microbial communities across a range of ecosystems. The team is made up of researchers with diverse expertise within microbial ecology and genomics, providing an intellectually robust and collaborative environment. The Centre is located within the Translational Research Institute (TRI), a unique multidisciplinary facility located at the Princess Alexandra hospital with a strong focus on translational research. This positions the team amongst top researchers and clinicians from diverse disciplines such as genomics, bioinformatics, immunology, oncology and gastroenterology, and provides the team with access to state-of-the-art core facilities. The Centre also has a dedicated PC2-certified laboratory fully equipped for molecular biology that includes an in-house white light laser confocal microscope (Leica), a PromethION (Oxford Nanopore Technologies) and access to a NovaSeq 6000 (Illumina). The Centre has a BD FACSAria Fusion fluorescence activated cell sorter with small particle detection and liquid handling robots for single cell genomic and culturing work, and maintains anaerobic culture and quarantine facilities. The operation of these facilities is supported by professional staff for microscopy, flow cytometry, sequencing and bioinformatics..

What you need to succeed

1. Education, training and/or relevant experience equivalent to the completion of a PhD in a relevant field (microbial ecology, microbial genomics, bioinformatics). Experience analysing human microbiome data is preferred.
2. Four years postdoctoral experience and demonstrated knowledge of bioinformatics and coding languages.
3. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team, along with proven ability to autonomously organise and prioritise tasks and workflow to meet project deadlines.
4. High level communication skills, including demonstrated written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.

• Remuneration: $120,443 to $131,749 pa (HEW7) (inclusive of $101,775 to $111,330 salary pa, 17% superannuation and 17.5% recreation leave loading)

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a Engineer, Software (Mobile) to join Digital Business Solutions, Administrative Division.

The Engineer Software (Mobile) contributes to supporting the creation of new and/or improvement of existing applications, interfaces, and content that will support a collaborative, connected and engaging digital experience. The role will demonstrate competence in developing on various mobile platforms (iOS, Android and Flutter) and be able to develop using user-centred design approaches, with a focus on quality to ensure compliance with appropriate quality frameworks and industry standards. The role is part of a team that works across various digital platforms. The work undertaken by this team is critical to driving business efficiencies and ensuring that day-to-day IT client computing runs smoothly. The appointee may be required to be contactable and/or work outside of standard business hours on occasion. These instances will be treated in accordance with the relevant provisions in the Enterprise Agreement for Professional Staff.

What you need to succeed

1. Education, training and/or experience equivalent to completion of a degree with at least four (4) years of subsequent relevant experience in user experience design within an information technology area.
2. Demonstrated DevOps experience in contributing as a technical expert within a team and implementing improvement strategies that support effective responses to client needs to achieve organisational goals.
3. Proven analytical, problem-solving skills & software engineering skills with demonstrated experience in designing, developing, deploying and implementing solutions using various contemporary mobile technologies.
4. Demonstrated ability to maintain productive and collaborative working relationships, including the ability to develop and present concepts to negotiate with and influence a diverse range of stakeholders.
5. Proven planning and organisational skills, with experience establishing own and workflow priorities and working across a diverse number of initiatives within tight and competing timelines.
6. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in developing, automating, and testing corporate mobile applications and the use of industry standard testing platforms (eg. Firebase, Bitrise and Bitbucket), with a focus on improving user experience.
